It's the most unremarkable thing in the coffee corner, and still the part I reach for most on the Dedica: a dosing funnel. Before I had one, a good part of the coffee landed next to the basket on the counter every time I filled it. A 51 mm funnel put an end to exactly that.

What a dosing funnel does

A dosing funnel (also called a filling funnel or filling aid) is a short ring that sits on the rim of the portafilter or directly on the basket. It widens the opening upward so nothing spills over when you fill or grind. Ideally, the dosing funnel lets you tamp the grounds without having to take it off.

Sounds trivial, but it's the foundation for an even coffee bed. And an even bed is half the battle against channeling and the key to a repeatable shot.

Why 51 mm on the Dedica

The Dedica uses the 51 mm portafilter. Many funnels on the market are made for 58 mm – the standard size of larger machines – and simply won't fit. A 51 mm portafilter funnel, on the other hand, sits flush and wobble-free on the Dedica range (EC680, EC685, EC785, EC885).

The effect shows up exactly where the Dedica is critical anyway: filling the small 51 mm basket. With a funnel no coffee falls beside it and tamping is easier – the prerequisite for a shot through a bottomless portafilter to run calm and bundled instead of spraying.

What to look for when buying

• 51 mm, Dedica fit. Check the vendor's model spec (EC680/EC685/EC785/EC885). 58 mm funnels won't fit.
• Grip. Depending on the model, the funnel sits only loosely, or firmly via a bayonet lock, by clipping over the rim, or by a friction fit. A screw-on 51 mm funnel sits especially firmly and lets you tamp right afterwards.
• Tamp-through? A real comfort plus: if your 51 mm tamper fits through the funnel, you can tamp straight through it without taking it off first – one step fewer, and the coffee bed stays untouched.
• Height and edge. A slightly inward-drawn edge reliably steers the grounds into the basket; enough height gives you room to distribute without anything overflowing.

How to use it properly

1. Fit it. Set the funnel flush on the portafilter or basket.
2. Fill or grind. Add or grind the coffee straight in – thanks to the funnel nothing falls beside it.

4. Tamp. If your tamper fits through the funnel, tamp straight through it; otherwise take the funnel off first. Then press straight, with steady pressure.
