Bottomless Portafilter for the DeLonghi Dedica

Of all the upgrades to my Dedica, none has made as much of a difference as switching to a bottomless portafilter. Not because the espresso suddenly tastes better overnight – but because for the first time, I saw what was really happening during extraction. And what you can see, you can improve.

What a bottomless portafilter is

The original Dedica portafilter has one or two spouts at the bottom. With a bottomless (also "naked" or "naked portafilter") one, this bottom is removed: You look directly at the basket from below, and the espresso flows out freely.

This might sound like a minor detail, but it's the difference between "I hope it works" and "I see if it works."

Why it's worth it

• You see flaws immediately. If the espresso flows out lighter and faster in one spot, the water is channeling through the coffee – this is called channeling. With a closed portafilter, you won't notice this; with a bottomless one, it's unmistakable.
• Direct feedback for your technique. You can see the results of your distribution and tamping. This makes the bottomless portafilter the best learning tool available for little money.
• Better crema and less detouring. The espresso falls directly into the cup, instead of passing through narrow plastic spouts – this preserves the crema and looks really good, by the way.

Recognizing and fixing channeling

If you see splashes or individual light streams during your first bottomless extraction, it's not a defect – it's the honest feedback that the closed portafilter previously concealed. Here's how to proceed:

1. Fill evenly. The most common reason for channeling is an uneven coffee bed. A dosing funnel for 51 mm ensures that the coffee lies flat in the basket.
2. Tamp straight. Tamped crooked = uneven flow. Press with consistent, vertical pressure.
3. Check the quantity. Too little coffee leaves space above the bed, and the water will push through. Stick to around 14–16g in the standard basket.

What to look for when buying

The Dedica uses the 51mm standard with three lugs (3 ears). Pay attention to:

• 51 mm, 3-ear mounting – fits the Dedica series (EC680/EC685/EC785/EC885). Check the model information provided by the seller.
• Solid craftsmanship – a well-made basket with even holes will ensure a more even flow.
• Matching basket – some sets come with their own basket; make sure the quantity and basket match your setup.

Who it's for – and who it's not

If you want to better understand your espresso and make it more consistent, the bottomless portafilter is the most honest and affordable upgrade. However, if you just want to quickly pull two cups in the morning without fine-tuning, the original double spout is more convenient. In the order of useful upgrades, it comes right after the dosing funnel – as the step with the biggest leap in control and quality.
